Science for a Better Life: 2005 Missouri Life Sciences Week
Missouri Life Sciences Week, April 11 through April 15, is an annual event that highlights the life sciences research of MU students and faculty. Events include seminars by internationally-acclaimed scientists, a two-day research poster session with over 300 presenters, a vendor show, workshops and career forums.
Chancellor Brady J. Deaton, left, speaks with MU doctoral student Travis Baughan about his research during the 2005 Missouri Life Sciences Week poster session. Baughan collaborated with Greg Tullis (below, second from right), research assistant professor; Monir Shababi (below, right), postdoctoral fellow, and Christian Lorson, assistant professor (not pictured), on research to develop a treatment for spinal muscular atrophy, a neuromuscular disorder and a leading genetic cause of infantile death.
MU has a thriving graduate research program and is one of the nation's top universities for involving undergraduates in research. Research also helps students financially. Last year, 2,532 undergraduates received $4 million and 1,000 graduate students were paid $7 million from externally sponsored research projects at MU.
