The Scourge of Global Hunger: Problems and Solutions
Tuesday, April 14, 2009
4-5:30 p.m.
204 Neff Hall, MU Campus

Join MU Chancellor Brady J. Deaton as he moderates the latest in a series of open forums on global topics of interest to the community. This discussion will provide an opportunity to engage in a campuswide conversation on global hunger, its consequences and what can be done about it.
According to the United Nations, 963 million people around the world currently suffer from undernourishment. Hunger and malnutrition are the leading risk to health worldwide; 25,000 people die every day from hunger and related causes. Beyond this already devastating impact on individual health, the consequences of hunger extend deeply into the world's social, poltical and economic fabric as well.
As complex and varied are the causes of the global food crisis, so too are its possible solutions. From student activism to faculty research, the need to address world hunger calls our entire campus to action. Keynote speaker Douglas Casson Coutts, will outline the challenges that lie ahead as we move forward in responding to this critical world issue. An opportunity for questions will follow Mr. Coutt's presentation.
On assignment from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Mr. Coutts is a Distinguished Visiting Professor, Department of Nutrition and Food Science, College of Human Sciences at Auburn University. He is developing and teaching Auburn's first undergraduate course called "World Hunger: Causes, Consequences and Responses," assisting in designing a hunger studies minor area of study and helping to establish an international institute of global hunger at Auburn. Mr. Coutts also supports Universities Fighting World Hunger (UFWH), a joint partnership with WFP and Auburn University with 70 university members in North America, and is a guest lecturer at UFWH member universities.
The Chancellor's forums are free and open to the public.
